Normec OWS Achieves Recognition for DIN Geprüft Marine Biodegradable Certification Scheme

We are excited to announce that Normec OWS has been recognized by DIN CERTCO for testing in accordance with the DIN Geprüft Marine Biodegradable Certification Scheme. This new certification complements our existing recognition by DIN CERTCO for testing in industrial compostability, home compostability, and soil degradation. With this addition, Normec OWS further strengthens its position as a comprehensive partner in biodegradability and sustainability testing. 

Key Features of the DIN Geprüft Marine Biodegradable Certification Scheme:

1. Expanded Focus on Ecotoxicity 

The new scheme emphasizes ecotoxicity testing, which is more rigorous and requires evaluation across three trophic levels:

• Decomposer: Marine micro-organisms.
• Primary Producer: Algae.
• Primary Consumer: Invertebrates.
  These requirements ensure that materials certified under this scheme are not only biodegradable but also safe for marine ecosystems.

2. Comprehensive Biodegradation Testing 

Biodegradation testing must be conducted under marine conditions, which include the following environments:

• Seawater.
• Seawater and sediment.
• Marine sediment only.
  Testing is performed at a controlled temperature range of 15-25°C, simulating realistic marine conditions.

3. Realistic Disintegration Testing 

Disintegration tests are also carried out in marine compartments that closely replicate real-life scenarios. These tests, like biodegradation, are conducted at 15-25°C to ensure practical applicability.
