Litter monitoring

Normec OWS offers on-site litter monitoring services. This is an accurate and objective way of determining the amount and composition of litter found across a specific geographical area of any size. We perform litter monitoring across large municipal areas, for example, to determine the effectiveness of litter-reducing measures taken by government or industry.

Why Normec OWS?

  • Independent laboratory

  • Expert in the field

Mapping the area

Our starting point is accurately mapping out the area involved. In order to ensure a statistically accurate sample for large areas, we take many different aspects into account, such as the differences between urban and rural areas and the proximity to schools, shopping centers, or public transport. This ensures that the areas we examine out in the field are representative of an entire municipality or region.

In order to objectively determine the effects of litter-reducing measures, we start by taking a time-zero measurement in the mapped area. This is done before any kind of new measures, such as new legislation or anti-litter campaigns, become effective. After a specific period, this is followed by a new round of litter monitoring.

In both cases, our dedicated team accurately counts the amount and kinds of waste found in the mapped area. This results in a statistically accurate appraisal of the effectiveness of the measures taken.

In certain cases we also perform litter monitoring on closed areas, which may include counting and cataloging, as well as weighing or collecting waste. For this purpose, our litter monitoring teams work from delivery vans fitted with all the necessary equipment, such as mobile balances and receptacles of different volumes and sizes.
