Life Cycle Costing (LCC)

The Life Cycle Costing (LCC) method provides insight into the economic aspects of the full or partial lifecycles of products and services. The costs created over the whole life cycle are often not reflected in the consumer price. In many cases, there are associated, maintenance, or external costs, such as environmental costs related to production and decommissioning.

Financial pillar

Normec OWS offers LCC analysis for in-house communication purposes. As the financial pillar of the sustainability assessment, LCC complements the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and the Social Life-Cycle Assessment (s-LCA). Together, these provide all-round insight into the sustainability aspects of a product, service, or activity.

The LCC methodology

LCC is performed according to the same basic framework as LCA (ISO 14040/14044), but no further specific international standardization is present. The LCC methodology can be performed from a system perspective and typically considers phases such as research & development, production, implementation and deployment, operation, and decommissioning.

By doing so, it covers the total cost of a product, process, or activity over its lifetime. Alternatively, the LCC can be calculated from the perspective of one actor in the life cycle, such as the producer. Whatever the perspective, LCC can be used in a prospective way to provide valuable information in the development of new products.
